The challenge with extreme low-carb diets—focusing solely on high-fat, high-protein, and minimal carbs—is that they can have long-term negative effects on your health.

1. What Does the Research Show

Research has shown that these types of diets may increase the risk of inflammatory issues down the line. That’s why it’s essential to approach weight loss with a balanced plan that supports your overall well-being.

2. How Low Carb Can Be Harmful

Studies have shown that consuming high-fat meals can lead to an increase in lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the bloodstream. Lipopolysaccharides are components of the outer membrane of certain bacteria, and when higher levels are introduced into the bloodstream, they can trigger inflammation.

3. What to Do Instead

If you’re planning to follow a low-carb diet, focus on incorporating plenty of vegetables, using healthy fats, and gradually reintroducing low-glycemic carbs. It’s also essential to work on improving blood sugar sensitivity and carbohydrate tolerance during this time. For best results, keep your low-carb diet short—around 3 to 6 weeks—and then begin adding low-glycemic carbs.
