1. Sleep Stage 1

On a 5 sleep stage system, stage 1 is actually the waking state before you fall asleep. However, in a 4 stage sleep system, stage 1 is the first level of being asleep. 

2. Deep Sleep

Deep sleep takes place for the most part in the first half of the night and should comprise about 10-25% of your total night’s sleep. The goal in our practice is to shoot for 20% nightly. 

3. REM Sleep

Unlike deep sleep, REM sleep typically occurs in the later half of the night and comes in waves as you move through your 3-4 stages of sleep. REM sleep should account for 25% of your total night’s sleep.
