Apparently starting your weight loss program with a detox diet is the new biggest thing…
This wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing except most so-called detox diets do more harm then good.
Here’s why:
A detox diet in principle in meant to literally pull toxins out of your cells and body and eliminate them.
Without getting to deep into the science of how this works I just want to give you an example of some detoxifying foods:
* Wheat Grass
* Kale
* Swiss Chard
* Broccoli
* Lemons
* Garlic
* Sprouts
* Beets (and beet greens)
* Parsley
* Ginger
* Dandelion greens
* Cabbage
* Chlorella
Did you notice how pretty much all those foods are green in color?
Now the reason I bring that up is because there was a “detox diet” recently written up in a major magazine read by millions of people that promoted “whole wheat Belgium waffles” as part of their detox diet…
It gets even better.
The waffles included yogurt and syrup…
Now either the author of that article has no idea what a detoxifying food is, or the magazine was just looking to sell more advertising and copies.
Regardless, it gives the reader a false sense of what a REAL detox diet is and what it can do for you.
A true detox diet actually eliminates wheat, dairy, and sugar, due to their allergic response tendencies in many people – including those who do not show up positive on celiac or gliadin based blood tests.
Also, a real detox diet is meant to give your body and digestive system a rest so that it can do what it knows how to do best and that is cleanse your cells and blood of toxic accumulated waste.
I actually recommend people who have a chronic illness or serious weight loss goal (need to lose over 100 lbs.) to seek out the guidance of a professional that specializes in holistic nutrition and detoxification.
I certainly wouldn’t follow any promotional detox diet out of a magazine that promotes eating waffles (I still can’t believe they would say that!).
The reason I’m making such a big deal out of not following any crazy old detox diet is because they are really powerful – so powerful that when done incorrectly they can do more harm then good.
Without grossing you out too much or sounding like a science geek, I want to explain to you very briefly what happens when you do a detox diet.
The first step is to undertake a fresh juice fast or a diet containing detoxifying foods like green vegetables, herbs, and other specific foods known for their cleansing ability.
What follows next is an emptying of toxins from fat and other cells in your body.
Those toxins are then swept away by your lymphatic system or blood, filtered, and then on to your intestines to be eliminated.
Now here’s where things can backfire – literally.
If you detox too fast or your liver or lymph system has become overloaded or stagnant you may not be able to actually remove these toxins (poisons) fast enough.
This is a serious issue.
The reason is that if you’re constipated or your detoxification process is backed up then those toxins you just released from their “storage containers” in your body are now allowed to run freely through your body causing havoc.
It’s not a pretty picture…
This is why you need to work with a professional that can recommend a customized program for you. It should include herbs and antioxidants to support you liver, a special dry massage for your lymph system, and a supplement to help you remove toxins daily from your colon so that they can’t be reabsorbed into your body.
I don’t write any of this to scare you, but rather just arm you with the information that you need to make educated decisions and not just follow a silly diet plan that promotes waffles as detox foods…
Let me just finish today by saying that a 10, 21, or 28 day detox diet may literally change your life and reverse disease, but you do need to thoroughly check out the source of that detox diet and make sure it is safe and grounded in science.
