1. What Was The Experiment

The immortal chicken heart experiment began in 1912 by Nobel Prize-winning surgeon, Dr. Alexis Carrel. The study aimed to explore the longevity of cells outside of the organism by removing the heart of a chicken embryo and placing it in a culture dish with a special nutrient solution.

2. What Did The Experiment Show

The experiment successfully kept the heart alive for 34 years, only concluding when researchers ceased the procedures they had been using. To sustain the heart, it was immersed in a solution containing electrolytes, amino acids, a fuel source, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, the solution in the Petri dish was regularly cleansed, either daily or weekly, to eliminate waste produced by the cells.
