TWT: Single vs. Double Insulin Spikes After Meals

Consistently testing your blood sugar levels used to mean having to finger prick yourself all day long…

Now with the availability of CGMs (continuous glucose monitors), we are better able to monitor our blood sugar throughout the day and receive a wide variety of information about our health.

As I have begun to monitor my blood sugar levels more and more, I have noticed that I frequently get a single rise in glucose after a complex meal followed by a 2nd rise shortly after.

As always, I want to bring you the science behind why this is happening so you can better understand your health and how your blood sugar plays a role.

So, join me on today’s #CabralConcept 2699 where I go over the research behind single vs. double insulin spikes after meals – Enjoy the show and let me know what you thought!

Show Highlights & Big Takeaways

1. What is Insulin

When you eat you get a rise in blood sugar. When your blood sugar increases the pancreas releases insulin which shuttles glucose into your cells and out of your blood.

2. What is a Bi-Phasic Spike

Following a meal your body will release insulin to bring down glucose and then will reevaluate and create more insulin to continue to reduce glucose. Studies have shown that a bi-phasic curve may be the result of better insulin secretion

3. Why is This Important

People with only a mono-phasic curve have poor fasting glucose levels and a have a harder time regulating blood sugar. Studies suggest they are less metabolically healthy and more prone to diabetes and risk of heart disease.
