Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver of people who drink little to no alcohol. It can lead to liver inflammation, damage, and in severe cases, liver failure.

The risk factors for NAFLD include a higher BMI, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension. Additionally, symptoms may include feeling fatigued or experiencing pain in the right side of your abdomen. To check for NAFLD, you can run certain blood tests, specifically checking liver enzymes. Additionally, an ultrasound or a non-contrast MRI can be used for diagnosis.

3. What Can We Do to Prevent/Reserve NAFLD

To prevent or reverse NAFLD, you can adopt several lifestyle changes. Following a Mediterranean diet is beneficial. Consume healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, and some nuts. Incorporate high omega-3 fish like wild salmon and trout into your diet, and ensure you get plenty of high-fiber foods. It is also important to limit processed carbohydrates. Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise per week.
