Can Nattokinase Replace Statins? The Science Behind Cholesterol

Statins are one of the most prescribed drugs in the world…
But there is now very strong research that shows that an enzyme from nature is showing amazing results for:
- Removing arterial plaque (by 36.6%)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Lowering triglycerides
- Increasing HDL (healthy cholesterol)
It’s hard to believe for most people because we’ve been constantly told that statins are the only way to improve our lipid markers and heart health.
But as usual, nature has a better remedy than the pharmaceutical industry.
Nattokinase – The Miracle Enzyme
This miracle enzyme is derived from a traditional fermented food (natto).
What makes it remarkable is how it works inside the body… not by blocking cholesterol production, but by helping the body naturally break down fibrin and arterial plaque.
In a large randomized, controlled human study of over 1,000 participants, researchers compared Nattokinase head-to-head against statins.Â
After just 26 weeks, the results were striking:
The Nattokinase group experienced a 36% reduction in arterial plaque, compared to just 11.5% in the statin group.
That’s more than three times the plaque regression in six months!
Another 12-month clinical study found that high-dose nattokinase (10,800 FU/day) effectively managed atherosclerosis progression and improved lipid profiles, including reductions in carotid artery plaque, and significant improvements in LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL.
The Dangers Of Statins
Statins can help lower cholesterol numbers, but they don’t come without trade-offs.
Commonly reported side effects include:
- Muscle pain, weakness, and cramping
- Fatigue and low energy
- Brain fog and cognitive issues
- Reduced CoQ10 levels, which affects mitochondrial health
Nattokinase works differently…
In the same research, it helped lower triglycerides comparably to statins, improved overall lipid profiles, and raised HDL, the protective, antioxidant form of cholesterol that helps clear oxidized LDL from the bloodstream.
For many people, that’s another major advantage.
How To Properly Use Nattokinase To Improve Heart Health
Nattokinase is not for everyone… Because it has natural blood-thinning properties, anyone currently taking a blood thinner should consult their doctor before use.
Another common reason people don’t see results is dosing.
Most Nattokinase supplements contain only 4,000–5,000 (FU). Clinical results show you need at least 10,000 FU per serving, taken on an empty stomach, to achieve meaningful benefits.
That’s exactly why, in our practice, we use a formula called Proteolytic Enzymes.
We simply take 2 capsules upon waking.
It provides:
- Clinically effective doses of nattokinase (10,000 FU per capsule)
- Serrapeptase, which supports recovery, inflammation balance, and immune regulation
- Rutin which helps stabilize and strengthen capillary walls, reducing fragility and permeability,
Taken daily on an empty stomach, these enzymes go to work on their own, supporting arterial health, circulation, and long-term cardiovascular resilience.
