Not too long ago the FDA gave its approval to a new weight loss pill, Belviq, with the hopes of helping our overweight population shed some pounds.
It certainly sounds like a noble goal, but here’s the problem…
“Studies showed that patients taking Belviq, known generically as lorcaserin, had modest weight loss. On average patients lost just 3 to 3.7 percent of their starting body weight over a year.”
That equates to about 7.5 pounds over a year for a 250-pound person.
Not exactly the type of results that should entice anyone to jump out of their seat and demand their doctor write them up a prescription. Especially since taking all natural probiotics daily for 12 weeks has been shown to help people lose about 5% of their body fat.
And, of course, there are no potentially toxic side effects to eating fermented foods (although if you do have allergic sensitivities to fermented foods you will want to start out with small amounts or just take a probiotic supplement).
Speaking of side effects, did I mention that the new weight loss pill comes with some “fine print” stating that taking this drug may lead to depression, migraines, and memory lapses…?
Who wants to potentially trade 5-10 lbs for depression?
I think I’ll pass…
Again, a 3% weight loss is certainly not enough of a benefit to gamble with your health considering the 4 previous attempts at getting a weight loss pill into the marketplace have led to psychiatric side effects, including depression and suicidal thoughts, and in 2010, Abbott Laboratories withdrew its drug, Meridia, after a study found it increased your risk for heart attack and stroke.
So why am I painting you such a grim picture?
To scare you, of course.
And you should be scared…
Deciding to ingest a synthetic chemical into your body is a big decision and it should not be one you take lightly. Anytime you are given the option of medicating yourself for a particular ailment it is your duty to be your own health advocate.
I believe you should do some research on your own to weigh the potential risks/benefits of taking a particular substance.
After all, in a case such as this, you could easily lose 5-7 lbs in ONE WEEK (not one year) by following a healthy nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle program.
Yes, you will have to limit certain toxic weight gaining foods and move a little more than you’re used to, but trust me you’re not only going to lose weight, you’re going to feel great as well!
