Vitamin D may have a positive effect on metabolism, which is the process by which the body converts food into energy. Some studies have suggested that vitamin D may help improve metabolism in several ways. Besides those listed above regarding healthy blood sugar support and bone health, Vitamin D may help increase weight loss and reduce body fat. In one study, people who took a vitamin D supplement lost more weight and had a greater reduction in body fat compared to those who did not take the supplement. 9 out of 10 people that I test in my Functional Medicine and Integrative Health practice have suboptimal vitamin D3 levels.

Although the vitamin D range for “normal” is 30 - 100 ng/mL, the truly optimal healthy vitamin D is level 50 - 70 ng/mL. The vast majority of people are in the 30s, which means that they are functionally deficient. As a result they are dealing with many of the symptoms listed above…

The reason most people are deficient isn’t through any fault of their own. The reason I say that is there are really only 3 ways to get sufficient vitamin D. I’ll explain below, but due to modern living only one way is guaranteed to get you optimal Vitamin D levels.

The good news is that vitamin D is inexpensive and easy to get on a daily basis-

1. Spend Time in the Sun

The sun is the primary source of vitamin D for most people. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces vitamin D. Aim to spend 15-20 minutes in the sun each day, or longer if you have darker skin. Never get a burn on your skin, but you must get enough sun to produce a tan in order to get the vitamin D benefits. If you are not maintaining a tan year round, you are most likely not getting enough vitamin D from the sun alone.

2. Eat Foods Rich in Vitamin D

While there are not many natural food sources of vitamin D, some options include fatty fish, cod liver oil, egg yolks, cheese, and mushrooms. However, it can be difficult to get since the actual vitamin D in these foods is quite low. While I do recommend choosing high vitamin D foods that work well with your current diet, typically food sources are not adequate to improve your blood levels.

3. Take a Vitamin D Supplement

If you are unable to get enough vitamin D from the sun or your diet, taking a vitamin D supplement can help ensure that you are getting enough of this important nutrient. Vitamin D supplements are available in different forms, including capsules and liquids. Just make sure you look for a product from a reputable Functional Medicine company that used GMP certifications and where the form of vitamin D is listed as cholecalciferol, Vitamin D3.

How Much Should You Take?

It's important to note that while vitamin D is essential for good health, it's possible to have too much of it. High levels of vitamin D can lead to toxic levels of calcium in the blood. Therefore, I never recommend supplementing with more than what you would get from being in the sun. This is why it’s better to supplement with a daily dose of vitamin D3 rather than mega-dose that some doctors recommend. Most children and adults need about 35IUs per pound of body weight per day. This equates to 2,000 - 5,000IUs per day for most adults. In our health practice 90% of our wellness clients use 4,000IUs.

Please keep in mind new labeling regulations are having supplement manufacturers change over from IUs (International units) to mcgs (micrograms) on the supplement label. The conversion is as follows:

1,000IUs = 25 mcg
2,000IUs = 50 mcg
3,000IUs = 75 mcg
4,000IUs = 100 mcg

As a result of the new labeling, in our practice we suggest 50-100mcg of vitamin D3 per day with food for most adults. You or your healthcare practitioner can decide what is best for you. Or, you could decide to test your vitamin D3 levels to know for sure.
